Conical Helix

Conical Helix

Some people begin at the top,

   on the wide circular rim,

   and, glancing downwards,

   tip, trip and topple.

Swirling, twirling and giddiness

   increase, as they descend

   the barely perceptible helix.

Narrower and narrower

   encroach the walls.

The people come, alone,

   to the still point of

   utter nothingness -

out of which creation was sung.

Some people begin at the bottom,

   constricted and squeezed,

   and gaze in hope

   to spaces above.

They walk the welcoming helix

   steadily, sturdily,

   upwards and outwards.

Wider and wider

   the walls back off.

The people come, with countless others,

   to the clear, capacious rim,

   breathing easily, deeply,

as if for the first time,

safe and secure, surrounded by songs.

Love descends to turn around

   the people spiralling down,

   warning, coaxing, gathering.

Though some insist on sliding alone,

   many are carried aloft.

Loves ascends to walk with

   the people spiralling upwards,

   inspiring, encouraging, guiding.

Though some are weak and stumbling,

   all are raised to praise.
