Robert Prevost: American Pope

Date added: 30/01/2026

The surprise and then the question:

‘Can anything good come out of…?’

A quick conclusion to Conclave,

a frantic search on our phones.

Yes, it can!’

Chicago says again: ‘Yes, we can.’

Twenty-five years a missionary,

son and citizen of States and Peru,

    two years in Rome,

    selecting bishops worldwide.

This begins to make sense and history.

Perusing the state of the world.

    and the Gospel of Jesus,

    he bears love for immigrants

and carries them with his words,

    trumping toxicity.

Humble, reticent, discerning,

at three score years and ten,

Leo the Fourteenth is the first Pope

    to be younger than me.

Many years unfold before this

    unhurried, unassuming, unobtrusive

    follower of Christ.
