19. Extraordinary Easters

18. Kingston to Cambridge without a Camel

In June 1999, Joseph Galgalo and I walked 95 miles, with 22 other friends, from 'Oxford to Cambridge with a Camel', to raise funds for camel-based nomad schools in northern Kenya.

On Sun 30 June 2024, for our 25th anniversary, Faith Galgalo, Joseph's 25 year old daughter, and I with friends, will walk 8 miles from 'Kingston to Cambridge without a Camel', to raise funds for Bubisa School, one of the schools funded in 1999.

When we were on leave in the UK for six months (Aug 1988 to Jan 1989), between our two terms of service with CMS at Kabare in Kenya, Harry Moore, the General Secretary of the Church Missionary Society, asked me to write the CMS Newsletter for July/August 1989. Since only General Secretaries wrote the Newsletter, this was entitled an Occasional Paper.

Oxford to Cambridge with a Camel, June 1999

From Mon 22 June to Sun 27 June 1999, Joseph Galgalo and I walked with 24 others from Oxford to Cambridge with a Camel to raise money for six primary schools in Northern Kenya. We walked to celebrate 200 years of the Church Mission Society (founded 1799) and in memory of Bishop Andrew Adano, who founded the schools. For a 5 minute film about the Camel Walk, click here.
